Toyota has taken a partnership with electric car maker Tesla and come out with an update of an obscure car variant - one they've actually produced on and off since the 90's.. The RAV4 EV is coming in an all new way.
Toyota and Tesla are keeping quiet on exact specs, but you can probably expect a version of the motor found in Tesla's Model S electric saloon. It will probably also feature the Model S batteries, which provide 160, 230 or 300 miles of driving range.
The RAV4 is a relatively large car, but not especially heavy. Speculation suggests the electric version will offer speeds closer to a 5.5 second, 0 - 60mph acceleration time. Toyota built an all-electric version limited edition from 1997 to 2003 - 1900 were sold.
That car's 27.4kWh NiMH battery pack delivers a 0 - 60 mph time of around 18 seconds, and a top speed of 78 miles per hour, along with a range of between 80 and 120 miles.
In paperwork filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla disclosed that Toyota was paying Tesla an additional $60 million to develop the RAV4 EV. The new RAV4 EV will be unveiled at the LA Auto Show in November, 2010.
