History of Hellertown, Pennsylvania

Hellertown was initially settled in 1742 by Christopher Heller of the Heller family, for which the community was named. The Hellers were immigrants from the German Palatine that came to America on the Winter Galley in 1738, four years before the establishment of Hellertown. When the community was first created, it was located in Bucks County, but it later moved to Northampton County, where it remains today. Christopher Heller had three (recorded) sons, Simon, Michael, and Jacob. Simon and Michael were responsible for securing a large portion of land on either side of Saucon Creek that now make up parts of both Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township. The third of the three sons, Jacob Heller, ended up being the sole proprietor of 902 acres of land including 600 acres given to him by his brother Simon. Jacob was also a Captain in the Revolutionary War that concluded in 1776.

Following its establishment, Hellertown grew steadily as a farming/agricultural community. The town was also full of artisans that specialized in unique trades such as glassblowing, pottery, and cabinet-making. An abundance of zinc and iron ore was discovered in the Saucon Valley in the 1850s. That coupled with the introduction of the North Pennsylvania Railroad in 1856 led to a boom in the economy and population of the Hellertown community. The Saucon Iron Company was chartered in 1866, but it would be sold off in 1884 due to the lasting effects of the depression of 1873 that caused a major dip in demand for iron railroad parts. Attempts were made to modernize the furnace to make it more profitable. During World War I, the demand for steel increased enough to keep the furnace afloat for a time, but by 1921 it was sold for scrap as it could not compete with its highly popular competitor, Bethlehem Steel. Despite opposition by many residents at the time, Hellertown was eventually incorporated as a borough of Northampton County in 1872. One hundred years later in 1972, a centennial celebration was held in Hellertown to commemorate its incorporation. Today, this lively little town continues to thrive and prosper as a part of small town Pennsylvania and all the charming culture that comes with it.
