Are you getting ready for a new addition to family or preparing to take on a babysitting job? You’ll want to be sure your vehicle is prepared for children. Keep these tips in mind to provide a safe and entertaining ride.

Car Seats

Most modern vehicles have a system in place for latching in car seats. Be sure to read your car seat manual thoroughly and follow the instructions for proper installation. New babies must face the rear of the car until they reach over 28 pounds. Children under the age of 12 should use a booster seat and stay out of the front passenger seat.

Kid-Friendly Accessories

If you don’t have tinted windows, put up a window shade. These shades use suction cups to attach to the window, and they block the sun from the baby’s eyes keeping them happy and maybe even asleep.

Keep a care kit in the car at all times. For infants, this could include extra diapers, wipes, and a fresh set of clothes. For older children, keep some bandages, necessary medications (inhalers, etc.), and water bottles.

Attach a car-mirror to the headrest of the backseat to be able to see a rear-facing infant from the driver’s seat.

Entertainment Capabilities

When preparing to cart around older children, they’ll appreciate some entertainment options. Look for a vehicle with plenty of USB ports and power outlets to keep their devices running. Keeping your backseat passengers entertained, especially during long trips, is essential to a peaceful drive.
