fall-leaves-300x225Fall is upon us, which means its time for watching the leaves change color, kids heading back to school and cooler weather. With the positives must come negatives. When fall hits, it brings with it a whole new set of dangers on the road. Take these tips from Bennett Toyota on how to handle fall driving hazards:

Proceed With Caution Over Bridges

As the fall ushers in the colder temperatures, bridges can be quite dangerous. Since a bridge is exposed to weather on the bottom and top, they freeze before the rest of the road. Unfortunately, you might not realize it until it is too late and you’ve hit a patch of ice. When making the transition from pavement to bridge, slow down, steer smoothly and brake gently.

Watch Out for Leaves on the Road

Leaves are a beautiful part of fall, and they can make the scenery quite spectacular. As you get deeper into the season, those leaves fall off the trees and blanket the roads. When approaching a pile of leaves, especially on the highway at great speeds, remember the leaves can be wet and become slippery. Quick acceleration, hard braking or sudden turns should be avoided because your vehicle can skid. There may also be hidden pools of water or ice under the leaves as well as a deep pothole. Be sure to watch out for “leaf peepers” who are paying more attention to the foliage than the roads.

Prepare for Heavy Rainstorms

Rainstorms in the fall tend to be heavy and sudden. When you’re on the highways in early fall, you must be careful of rubber and oil that have built up on the surface over the summer. This causes the road to be slippery when wet. Its not util you have a few heavy downpours that the roads get clear and safe.
