The auto industry is making significant strides with technology. It is hard for many of us to keep up, but it is going to take off whether we are ready for it or not. Technology in the auto industry is improving the ride, connectivity, range, and safety. By 2020, the cars we know now will transform dramatically, and yes, we may finally see autonomous rides. Allentown Toyota looks at promising advancements in auto tech.

1. Un-manned driver

Autonomous vehicles are dominating the headlines. From commuter cars to tractor trailers, auto manufacturers are perfecting technology that removes the driver and relies on technology to drive, park, and make decisions to avoid car crashes. The goal of self-driving cars is to improve emissions and road conditions, and to decrease car accidents. Cars will be equipped with lasers, sensors, and processing features that detect threats and take steps to avoid a collision. This will remove the driver, whose errors contribute to the most car accidents.

2. Four-banger performance rides

Ford has already embraced the 4-cylinder in its iconic muscle car—the Ford Mustang. More performance car manufacturers will do the same in the near future. A 4-cylinder can be supercharged and configured to kick out 200 hp or 600 hp.

3. Impressive body panels

In just 35 years, a majority of vehicles rolling off the line will likely be hybrids. This means manufacturers are working tirelessly to increase efficiency and reduce vehicle weight. Toyota is already engineering body panels that collect energy from the sun and store it in the body panels.

Another advancement in body-panel design is reconfigurable panels. SUVs can become trucks just by removing and retracting lightweight panels. The design would give drivers the space of an SUV and the hauling capacity of a pickup.
