We are all living in the age of technology, and there have never been so many affordable entertainment options available to us than what we have now. However, there’s still something magical about a trip to the cinema. More than 100 years since its introduction to the American public, the silver screen still dazzles crowds as it did back then. Here are some of the most history-rich cinemas in and around Allentown.

Civic Theatre

Started in 1927 and moved to its current home in Allentown’s West End, the Civic Theatre is a symbol of the local theater scene. In 1997, it was the first community theater to produce the award-winning classic “Angels in America,” by Tony Kushner.

Emmaus Theatre

Located south of Allentown, the Emmaus Theatre offers a well-picked mix of current movies and popular classics. The sodas and snacks come at decent prices, and you have the option of renting the entire theater for a private viewing.

Shankweiler’s Drive-In

The second drive-in ever to open in the U.S. and the oldest still running today, Shankweiler’s Drive-In has been running continuously since 1934. Not only that, but it has kept up with the times, too, with modern digital video and sound equipment.

The Roxy

Opened in 1921, in the age of vaudeville, The Roxy has had a tumultuous history, having survived the Great Depression.  It’s hosted many live shows by musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and KISS, among many others.

If you’re in or around Allentown, make sure you grab a piece of history by visiting one or more of these historical places.
